Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for solvent extraction
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation and procedures for conducting solvent extraction and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Receive, interpret and clarify shift changeover details
   • Communicate with other personnel job requirements
   • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
   • Select appropriate type of auxiliary equipment
   • Perform equipment pre-start checks
   • Identify, address and report potential risks and hazards
   • Identify, address and report environmental issues
   • Adhere to emergency procedures
   • Use dust suppression and extraction methods
   • Ensure area is well ventilated
2. Start-up equipment in sequence
   • Carry out start-up procedures and completes start-up checks according to plant configurations and system requirements
   • Confirm plant is operational
3. Operate and monitor equipment
   • Read and interpret data from equipment indicators
   • Continuously inspect operations/plant and containment areas for defects and potential problems
   • Adjust equipment to approved operating parameters
   • Add reagents to approved operating parameters
   • Carry out operator level maintenance
   • Complete all required documentation
   • Pass on end of shift information verbally or in writing to incoming shift
4. Conduct housekeeping activities
   • Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
   • Clean and maintain condition of equipment, ensure suitability for use, and address/report issues
   • Manage and/or report hazards, and mat daintain a safe working environment
   • Process records
5. Shutdown in sequence and/or isolate equipment
   • Shutdown or isolate equipment based on process and safety requirements
   • Perform post shutdown or isolation checks
   • Return equipment to service

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of solvent extraction including:

identifying and managing hazards affecting on site extraction activities

handling hazardous substances correctly

demonstrates completion of solvent extraction that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

performing start up in sequence on equipment to meet job requirements

operating plant to meet job requirements

reading equipment indicators

inspecting outputs for defects

adjusting equipment to maintain optimum output

shutting down and/or isolating the equipment in sequence

performing routines checks on equipment

breakdown procedures

sampling requirements
